Mixel Studio Leads AR Lecture and Hands-On OXR Workshop for Tamkang University Architecture Students at Columbia GSAPP

NEW YORK — Aug 5th — Mixel Studio founder and CEO Chiao Lin led an augmented reality lecture and hands-on workshop on OXR, the company’s no-code spatial presentation platform, for visiting architecture students from Tamkang University at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP).

The session served Nomad Studio, a visiting studio of fourth-year undergraduate and graduate students from Tamkang University’s Department of Architecture. It was organized at the invitation of Jenny Ling, President of AIA Taipei and President of the Columbia GSAPP Alumni Board.

A Tamkang architecture alumnus, Lin traced his path from a Bachelor of Architecture to graduate study in human-computer interaction at the University of Michigan and the founding of Mixel Studio. He described how his design background shaped OXR, which is built to make immersive 3D communication accessible.

Every student worked directly with OXR during the workshop. Students found the platform intuitive, while faculty noted its potential as a tool for architectural presentations and design reviews.

Lin also demonstrated OXR’s multi-device synchronization: a host guides participants through 3D architectural models while viewers join from web browsers or XR headsets, with model changes, content, and live annotations updating across every device in real time. The approach supports remote critiques and international studio exchanges while reducing the cost and logistics of travel and physical model transport.

In follow-up meetings, Lin presented OXR to Hyon Woo Scott Chung, Assistant Professor of Architecture at Parsons School of Design, and Evan Shieh, Assistant Professor of Architecture at the New York Institute of Technology, who discussed its use in future cross-institutional studios and design reviews. The following day, at Ling’s invitation, Lin demonstrated the platform to Andrés Jaque, Dean and Professor of Columbia GSAPP, and Leah Cohen, Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations, prompting further discussion of spatial computing’s role in architectural education.

“For me, this experience was especially meaningful,” said Lin. “After moving away from traditional architectural practice and into entrepreneurship and software development, I never expected that one day I would bring a platform I build back to students from my own architecture school. Being able to share OXR with younger Tamkang students and explore its possibilities with architecture faculty felt like a full-circle moment.”

“Because I was trained in architecture, I also understand how much time and effort students invest in producing physical models throughout the design process, including site models, massing models, sectional models, and detailed studies,” Lin continued. “In many cases, however, those projects have already been fully developed in 3D software. OXR provides a faster way to bring those digital models into a real-world spatial experience, allowing students and reviewers to examine scale, form, circulation, and design details without rebuilding every iteration as a physical model.”

Beyond live XR presentations and collaborative design reviews, OXR’s web-embedding capability creates additional opportunities for architectural communication. Students can embed interactive 3D projects directly into their personal portfolios, while architecture schools can showcase work from multiple students through online exhibitions, studio websites, or program archives.

Mixel Studio extends special thanks to Jenny Ling for her invitation, encouragement, and support for OXR. Her involvement made the program possible and reflects a shared interest in advancing the role of spatial computing in architectural education.

The demonstrations received enthusiastic responses from faculty across several institutions. Hyon Woo Scott Chung, Assistant Professor of Architecture at Parsons School of Design, and Evan Shieh, Assistant Professor of Architecture at the New York Institute of Technology, were both impressed by the rapid advancement of XR technology and recognized its potential for urban and architectural design.

Mixel Studio is actively continuing discussions with participating faculty to explore future applications of OXR in architectural education. Through spatial computing, the company hopes to help students move beyond the physical limitations of traditional classrooms and models, creating new opportunities for architecture students and educators from different locations and cultural backgrounds to present, review, and discuss design ideas together.
