OXR Secures Exclusive Worldwide Technology License Through University of Michigan Innovation Partnerships

The agreement strengthens OXR’s intellectual property foundation and supports Mixel Studio’s strategy to commercialize its patent-pending multi-device spatial computing technology.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Mixel Studio, Inc. is pleased to announce that it has executed an exclusive, worldwide software and patent license agreement with the Regents of the University of Michigan, through U-M Innovation Partnerships, for the core technology underlying OXR.

OXR is a spatial presentation platform that enables organizations to create, present, and share interactive 3D content across web browsers, mobile devices, and XR headsets. Its underlying multi-device orchestration architecture allows presenters to coordinate connected experiences in real time while assigning different roles and levels of control to participants using different devices.

The technology was developed by members of Mixel Studio’s founding team in collaboration with Dr. Michael Nebeling, an associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Information. A U.S. provisional patent application covering the technology was filed on April 10, 2026.

OXR’s journey began within the University of Michigan innovation ecosystem. In 2025, the platform OXR won the University of Michigan’s James A. Kelly Learning Lever Prize. The competition recognizes student-created tools with the potential to meaningfully improve learning, and OXR received the $10,000 grand prize for its approach to making teacher-led immersive learning more accessible and effective.

That early recognition helped the team advance OXR from a university-developed innovation into a commercial platform designed for use across education, research, museums, product demonstrations, design review, and remote collaboration.

Mixel Studio is actively commercializing the licensed technology through continued product development, institutional deployments, customer pilots, and strategic partnerships. The company’s commercialization strategy focuses on making spatial computing easier to create, distribute, and experience across devices—without requiring organizations or their audiences to rely on a single type of hardware.

The agreement provides a long-term framework aligned with Mixel Studio’s plans to expand OXR’s browser-based publishing, multi-device synchronization, live presentation, and self-guided experience capabilities. It also positions the company to establish commercial relationships and strategic distribution partnerships across a broad range of industries and international markets.
